Lag, crashes or a black screen? The full troubleshooting list

Optimization · Troubleshooting

Most emulator problems are not "broken software" — they are misconfigured settings. Below is an actionable checklist across CPU, RAM, GPU, drivers and virtualization. Follow it in order and you will usually be done within ten minutes.

1. Check the basics first

Running an open-world title on a decade-old low-voltage CPU will never be smooth, whatever you tweak. Confirm the following:

  • Quad-core CPU or better, 8 GB RAM minimum (16 GB for multi-instance)
  • At least 10 GB free on both the system drive and the emulator drive
  • Windows 7 or later, 64-bit strongly recommended

If you fall short, add memory or move to an SSD — that beats every software tweak.

2. CPU and memory allocation

Open Settings → Performance and apply these rules:

  • CPU cores: about half your physical cores — 4 cores on an 8-core machine
  • Memory: 4096 MB for a single instance, scale down when running several
  • Never allocate every core; Windows itself needs headroom
⚠️
Allocating more cores than you physically have causes thread contention and makes things slower. On a 4-core CPU pick 2, not 4.

3. GPU and rendering mode

Black screens, texture glitches and tearing are almost always a rendering-mode issue. In Settings → Performance → Render mode, try in this order:

  • DirectX (Speed+): first choice for NVIDIA / AMD discrete GPUs
  • OpenGL (Compatibility): use on older GPUs, integrated graphics or when you get a black screen

Restart the emulator after each change. Set resolution to 1600×900 or 1920×1080 and leave DPI at its default.

4. Drivers and VT

These two are the most commonly overlooked items:

Our support data shows roughly 45% of "it lags" reports disappear once the GPU driver is updated and VT is enabled.
  • Download the latest driver from the GPU vendor and choose a clean install
  • Enable VT in BIOS — see the step-by-step VT guide
  • Turn off Windows options that consume virtualization, such as Memory integrity

5. If nothing works

  • Create a clean instance with the Multi-Instance Manager to rule out a corrupt config
  • Back up your data, reinstall, or try LDPlayer 5
  • Close heavy background apps: screen recorders, streaming tools, other VMs
  • Make sure the game itself is up to date — old clients often clash with the kernel

If the issue persists after all of this, send us your hardware details and log files through the feedback link and an engineer will look at your case.
